Essential Step in Your Skincare Routine: Exfoliating Products

Our skin goes through a turnover process, where dead skin cells shed and new cells are formed roughly every 28 days. However, due to external factors like harmful environments and stress, this process can slow down. That's why regular exfoliation is important.

However, avoid using scrub products with sharp particles or beads as they can leave tiny, invisible wounds on the skin's surface. Paula's Choice liquid exfoliants are gentle on the skin and remove surface dead skin cells, making them an essential step in your skincare routine. Removing the buildup of dead skin on the surface reveals healthier skin, leading to a glowing complexion and smoother skin texture.

AHA and BHA Ingredients

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Glycolic Acid): AHA ingredients work to instantly remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. They also enhance the skin’s natural moisture-retaining ability, making AHA suitable for sun-damaged or dry to normal skin.

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid, Salicylic Acid): BHA not only works on the skin’s surface but also penetrates into the pores to remove buildup inside. This makes BHA highly effective for oily or combination skin with excess sebum, acne, or large pores. BHA also has soothing properties, so it’s gentle enough for sensitive skin.

How to Use Liquid Exfoliants

After cleansing and toning, apply a liquid exfoliant with AHA or BHA. Start by dispensing an appropriate amount onto a cotton pad or your palm, then apply it to your face. Unlike scrubs or gommage products, liquid exfoliants don’t need to be rinsed off, and you don’t have to wait for them to absorb fully before moving on to the next skincare steps. After applying your exfoliant, continue with the next steps of your routine, like serums, treatments, moisturizers, or eye creams. Always finish your routine with a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher during the day. You can alternate or combine AHA and BHA products according to your skin condition or preference.

What Concentration Should I Use?

AHA is most effective in concentrations of 5-10%, while BHA works best at 0.5-2%. The most effective concentration depends on your skin type, concerns, and sensitivity. To find the best concentration for your skin, it's recommended to try products with different AHA and BHA concentrations and see what works best.

How Often Should I Exfoliate?

If you’re new to liquid exfoliants, give your skin time to adjust to the ingredients. Start by applying exfoliants 2-3 times a week in the evening, and once your skin gets used to it, gradually increase the frequency. Depending on your skin type and personal preference, you can use AHA or BHA products once or twice a day.
